Benefitting Mental Health Education
The 10th Annual Warrior Run: The Race for Life, an event featuring a USATF-sanctioned 5K race and untimed one-mile walk will be held Saturday, October 5, 2019, at 5:15 p.m. The races start and finish at the Bell Tower @ Dogwood Park, off Pleasant Street, in the historic Village of Mariemont, Ohio, and winds through the tree-lined streets of the Village. The race is followed by a night of music, carnival-style kids’ games, and food available from 50 West Hamburgers,
Pontiac Barbecue, LaRosa’s pizza, UDF ice cream, as well as homemade chili, hot dogs, grilled cheese and desserts. At dusk, the event will conclude with a family movie in the center of the Bell Tower Park.
Established in 2008 as the James W. Miller Memorial Fund to honor race director Nancy Miller’s late husband, who died by suicide that year, the fund is now known as 1N5, inspired by the statistic that one in five teens and adults suffer from mental illness. 1N5 is a non-profit organization with a mission to prevent youth suicide through awareness and education, reduce stigma and serve as a community mental health resource.
Since 2008, 1N5 has raised over $1.1 million and impacted over 108,000 local elementary, high school and college students. The Warrior Run benefits Surviving The Teens, a Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center program and is used to provide mental health education programs in schools in the Greater Cincinnati area.
Surviving the Teens is now in over 56 schools in the area and teaches students depression and suicide prevention, providing adaptive ways to cope with stressors, ways to connect and positively communicate with parents, how to help themselves or others who may be depressed or suicidal, and how to access referral sources.
The CDC reports that the rate of suicide among young people jumped 56% between 2017 and 2016 and suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death in youth ages 10-24. 20% of youth ages 13-18 live with a mental health condition with 50% presenting by age 14 and 75% by age 24. Our youth are in crisis.
