From August 13-15, the Ohio State Bar Association will welcome former Nixon White House Counsel John W. Dean and Cleveland attorney James “Jim” D. Robenalt, a presidential historian, author and partner at Thompson Hine LLP, for a special continuing legal education (CLE) program titled 37 Conversations: The Nixon/Dean Exchanges That Changed History in several locations around Ohio.
The 3.25-hour CLE seminar, for which attorneys can earn professional conduct credit, will feature an analysis of the Mueller Report and parallels to the Watergate impeachment findings by the House Judiciary Committee in 1974. The program will present a unique opportunity to put into perspective the 10 potential obstructive acts identified by Mueller along with Congress’s findings regarding similar activity by Richard Nixon and those in his White House during the Watergate scandal.
Attorneys can register for the programs at www.OhioBar.org (by searching “Dean”). Members of the general public not seeking CLE credit may register to attend at a discounted rate by calling the OSBA toll free at 800-232-7124.
While in Columbus, Dean and Robenalt will also speak at the Columbus Metropolitan Club on the Legacy of Watergate as well as share their perspectives on current events. This event is sponsored by the Chief Justice Thomas J. Moyer Legacy Forum and tickets are available at https://columbusmetroclub.org/event/john-dean/.
About the Speakers
John W. Dean, an Ohio native, served as chief minority counsel to the Judiciary Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives, the associate director of a law reform commission, and associate deputy attorney general of the United States before becoming counsel to President Richard Nixon in July 1970 at the age of 31. He served as Richard Nixon’s White House lawyer for one thousand days, recounting his experience and the Watergate scandal in two books: “Blind Ambition” (1976) and “Lost Honor”(1982). He lives in Los Angeles with his wife, Maureen, and now devotes his time to writing and lecturing, having retired from his career as a private investment banker. He has recently released his 12th book (10th since retiring), “The Nixon Defense,” which returns to Watergate and is based on material only recently made available.
Jim Robenalt is a partner and former chair of the business litigation group at Thompson Hine LLP’s Cleveland office. He is the author of four non-fiction books dealing with the American presidency and political culture: “Linking Rings, William W. Durbin and the Magic and Mystery of America” (Kent State University Press 2004); “The Harding Affair, Love and Espionage During the Great War” (Palgrave 2009); “January 1973: Watergate, Roe v. Wade, Vietnam, and the Month that Changed America Forever” (Chicago Review Press, 2015); and the just released “Ballots and Bullets: Black Power Politics and Urban Guerrilla Warfare in 1968 Cleveland” (Chicago Review Press, 2018).
