Clark State Community College will welcome qualified local high school students to the Johns Hopkins University Engineering Innovation program for the fifth consecutive year. Applications for the program are now being accepted.
“The Johns Hopkins Engineering Innovation Summer program is delighted to return for our fifth summer at Clark State Community College,” said Dr. Karen Borgsmiller, director of Engineering Innovation at Johns Hopkins University. “We value our partnership with Clark State which has resulted in 77 high school students from the Springfield community learning more about careers in engineering while taking a college-level engineering course.”
Eligible students from Champaign, Clark, Greene, Logan, Madison, Miami and Montgomery counties are encouraged to apply for the program. Students who complete Engineering Innovation with a grade of a B or above will receive three college credits from Johns Hopkins University. Engineering Innovation can also be applied as 240 internship hours.
“This means that students leave the program having experienced JHU curriculum and labs, and can earn JHU credit plus internship hours,” said Toni Overholser, Clark State Foundation director. “Participating in Engineering Innovation can truly set students apart and make them stand out to any college of their choice when embarking on their careers in the future.”
In just four weeks, students will complete lab activities in computer engineering, chemical engineering, electrical engineering, material science, civil engineering, robotics and mechanical engineering. They will also prepare a presentation in response to a Request for Proposal, learn about engineering economics and discuss engineering ethics.
“The program is designed to be challenging,” said Overholser. “Students will experience situations common to higher education and professional spaces. Engineering Innovations will create an environment of understanding for students; one in which they realize challenges are part of the learning process, and when you overcome challenges, there is growth.”
The Johns Hopkins Engineering Innovation program is offered at no charge to students thanks to a scholarship. It also includes the chance to visit Johns Hopkins University for a day in Baltimore, Maryland.
Engineering Innovation is limited to 24 students and will be offered at Clark State from June 24 through July 19, Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Prerequisites are Algebra II, trigonometry, chemistry and/or physics, and experience with a spreadsheet application. Visit Johns Hopkins Summer program on the Clark State website to learn about applicant eligibility and to access applications for the Johns Hopkins summer STEM programs.
