SPRINGFIELD – In celebration of National Volunteer Week, April 23-29, the Mitchell Hills Club (MHC), a not-for-profit family recreation and golf club, is extending an invitation to area families to tour the club and sign up for a free day of entertainment and activities, including golf, swimming and family games.
Mitchell Hills Club, located at 5350 Morris Road, was established in 1955 by a group of volunteers who operated the recreational club with a unique model of membership involvement. Unlike other recreation facilities and clubs in the Springfield- Urbana area, Mitchell Hills relies on the goodwill of volunteers. Paid staff support accounts for less than 25% of the annual expense budget of the club. Management is provided by volunteer board members. Social activities, golf events and swim team arrangements are organized by volunteers. Members also volunteer to beautify club grounds with plantings and often tackle paint and repair projects. The unique MHC model of volunteer operation allows the club to keep fees low.
The club is celebrating its volunteer tradition by offering new opportunities for area residents to enjoy the club’s offerings. MHC President Matt Johnson explained, “For over 60 years, our club has offered an affordable, inclusive opportunity for family recreation. This year, we are inviting our community to enjoy the unique MHC family recreation tradition that has brought together three generations.”
On June 3, Mitchell Hills will host the first Mitchell Hills’ Community Day. Area residents who are interested in learning more about the club are encouraged to enjoy the club on June 3 as guests. A guest Community Day pass may be obtained by calling (937) 313-9102 or sending email to email@example.com
The June 3 Community Day will include entertainment throughout the day, featuring performances by Allison Road and the Blues Creek Band. Pa’s Barbecue will be available to provide food and refreshments.
Tours and visits to the club may also be arranged during the Volunteer Week observance.
