BELLEFONTAINE, Ohio –The Ohio Hi-Point Career Center (OHP) Board of Education met on Wednesday, April 26, 2017 to celebrate student and staff successes from the school year and discuss district updates.
Superintendent, Dr. Rick Smith, gave his district report to the board, including updates about the 2017 Ohio School Board Association (OSBA) Business Honor Roll,OHP prom, the Common Cause Book Drive, the Academic Achievement Breakfast at Honda, and recognition of the Students of the Month and Staff Members of the Month. Ohio Ready Mix/Duff Quarry, Orbis Corporation, McCullough Industries, and Area Energy and Electric were honored as part of the OSBA Business Honor Roll program. The program gives school districts a way to say “thank you” to local businesses and recognize them for their valuable contributions to schools. OSBA provided personalized certificates to present to businesses. “We’re very excited and appreciative for all of our partners who received this award because they play such an important role in the community and our local schools. Our business partners contribute a lot to what we are doing at OHP and we’re looking forward to building even more internships and job shadowing opportunities in the future,” Smith said.
Dr. Smith reported that this year’s prom had the highest attendance in over four years and that Angie Walls, Brian Badenhop, and Justin Cochran did a great job organizing the event along with other staff members and law enforcement officials who assisted in chaperoning.
For the last couple of months, the students, staff, and faculty at OHP have been collecting children’s books to donate to local elementary schools of the 14 partner district as part of the Common Cause Book Drive. The original goal was to collect 5,000 new or gently used books. When the final books were collected, counted, and organized, there were 5,513 books! Early Childhood Education (ECE) instructor Angie Walls, and students, Ariana Fout, Abby Phipps, and Kayla Evans have been traveling to the local schools to deliver the boxes of books to each classroom and also read a story to them. The Printing and Graphics program contributed a great part to the cause by creating advertisements and the entire ECE program helped sort and count the books before shipping them out.
Students traveled to the Honda Heritage Center in Marysville, Ohio to celebrate their outstanding academic achievements with the other schools in Logan County at the annual Academic Achievement Breakfast. Through dedication, passion and hard-work, these students were selected by the OHP high school staff in their respective subject areas as outstanding achievers. Mr. Caleb Lang acknowledged the students and was assisted at the event by high school counselors, Lynne Hall and Melissa Gonglik.
The OHP Board of Education recognized and honored this year’s students and staff members of the month prior to the start of the board meeting. Staff members received their awards from Superintendent Dr. Rick Smith and board president, Anne Reames. The following students and staff were honored: September – Philip Corwin (Riverside), Natalie Thomas (Urbana); October – Abby Phipps (Waynesfield-Goshen), Camron Weber (Benjamin-Logan), and Melissa Gonglik (Student Counselor); November – Kacie Bush (Indian Lake), Jason Surmaceviz (Mechanicsburg), Amy McCarthy (School Nurse); December – Maykakyla Smith (Mechanicsburg), Gavin Stanley (Benjamin-Logan), and Lynn Hall (Student Counselor) and TJ Bales (VOSE); January – Aundria Sheeley (Benjamin-Logan), Trent Moyer (Marysville), and Tami Troyer (Administrative Aide); February – Tabitha Daughtery (Marysville), Brandon Rose (Bellefontaine), and Caleb Lang (Academic Supervisor); March – Abbygail Dolan (Indian Lake), Josiah Butanis (Graham), and Bob Alig (Auto/Diesel Instructor); April – Ebony Peoples (Graham), Caleb Thornburgh (Diesel Technology), and Samantha Gessler (Mathematics Instructor); May – Shelby McMaken (West-Liberty Salem), Kodie Shear (Urbana), and Carrie Preston (English Instructor).

- Communications Coordinator, Adam Grillot, reported website updates (ohiohipoint.com) and a complete marketing strategy for the board which included the remainder of this school year and upcoming years. Grillot provided information about the goals and the plans to increase the overall visibility of the career center while enhancing the public’s awareness of the services, resources, and education opportunities offered.
- Science Instructor, Araina Johnson, was awarded the 2016-2017 Pat Roby Academic Grant which gave OHP students the opportunity to watch a kidney transplant via video conference with COSI/OSU.
- OHP Allied Health and Nursing (AHN) students traveled to Toledo University this past week to compete in HOSA at the state competition. There were a total of 27 students from Ohio Hi-Point that competed in various events. Three of Ohio Hi-Point’s AHN students will travel to Orlando, Florida to compete at the 2017 HOSA National Leadership Conferencefrom June 20-24. Aundria Sheeley took first place in Personal Care. She competed in bed making and patient gown replacement. As Sheeley spoke about HOSA, she stated, “it has made me look at things different and makes me more excited about health care”, as she is very eager to travel to Orlando to compete, in the mean time she is practicing her skills and reviewing her techniques. Alexis Lingrel won second in Medical Spelling. The first round consisted of selecting correct medical terminology spellings followed by a spelling bee where she performed very well. Lingrel stated, “HOSA has allowed me to meet new people and bond with students in my lab.” As she prepares for Nationals, Lingrel is reviewing her words and the materials that were covered in lab. Victor Kep was selected as the new Ohio HOSA State Secretary. Kep’s journey began in November when he started to prepare his application for this position. In order for Kep to be the State Secretary, he had to put together his application, transcripts, and a written essay that covered what he could contribute to HOSA. Kep stated, “I will help contribute advancement within the health care field”. During his competition, his team gave a speech and went through an interview process.
- OHP Electronics Engineering students swept the competition at the National Robotics Obstacle Challenge. Presley Breeding (Indian Lake) and Justice Griffth (Graham) finished first, Sean Allison (Marysville) and Logan Miller (Indian Lake) finished second, and Bailey Cushman (West Liberty-Salem) and Thomas Tossey (Triad) finished third.
- The following students advanced to the state FCCLA competition:main campus students are Laura Henry & Chelsea Horne – Product Development; Rosie Rogers – Leadership; Sandra Alspaugh & Lindsey Milligan – National Projects in Action; Emily Burrows, Jazmyn Sampson, & Camron Weber – Chapter in Review; and Austin James & Missy Reynolds – Promote & Publicize. - OHP/Riverside High School Business Professionals of America (BPA) achieved unprecedented success at the State Leadership Conference March 16-17. Five ofRiverside’s students were selected as interns. Riverside had 19 students receive their BPAStatesman Torch award. There were also 24 students who competed on an individual or team basis.As a result of the competitions, 13 students are advancing in their contests to the NationalLeadership Conference. In addition, four additional seniors are attending to receive theirAmbassador Torch Award.
- OHP Aviation Occupations students competed in the Sinclair Tech Prep. Showcase and did very well. 1st Place – Aviation Occupations: Logan Baldwin (Graham), Justin Longworth(Graham) , Davin Jordan(Graham); 2nd Place – Aviation Occupations: Curtis Noble(Graham), George Bugg(Graham), William Paul (Urbana); 1st Place – Aviation Maintenance: Austin Sparks (Graham), Hunter Kauffman (Graham), Blake Kalb (Graham); 2nd Place – Aviation Maintenance: Andrew Fansler (Urbana), Adam Schultz (WLS), Brendan Gallagher (Graham)
- Empty Bowls of Logan County will be hosted at OHP on Thursday, May 4, from 5-7 p.m.
- Graham Agribusiness and Production Systems students assisted in packing 75,000 meals for local food pantries for Meals of Hope.
The next Ohio Hi-Point Career Center Board of Education meeting will be held May 24, 2017 at 7:00 p.m.
