Building Intercultural Awareness in Springfield

The Global Education and Peace Network would like to invite you to their program “Springfield High School Students Speak: How to Build Intercultural Awareness,” on Tuesday, May 2 at 6:30 p.m. to be held at Room 105 of the Shouvlin Center at Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio. At this program, the Springfield High School Student Leadership Team will present their recommendations on how to best build intercultural awareness, especially among youth, in Springfield, Ohio. Their presentation will include poetry, drama, marketing suggestions and their plans for two Global Education programs during the group’s 2017-2018 series.

The students have been considering this question during the 2016-2017 school year as part of a project-based learning exercise, applying their knowledge to a specific problem.  Their staff consultant has been Gerry Griffith, Academy Principal at Springfield High School. Karen Elder coordinates the Project-Based Learning for the Springfield City Schools District, working with students at all grade levels in various projects to apply their education. Members of the Global Education and Peace Network have met with the students several times during the year to discuss their ideas and their progress.

The Global Education and Peace Network started after the City conducted study circles following the 9-11 attack on the World Trade Center in 2001. Their goal is to educate and build bridges across cultures.  This year their theme is: “Revisiting Our Roots: Promoting Intercultural Understanding.” This event is free and open to the public.  For more information, contact Nancy Flinchbaugh (937) 324-7696.
