Church and Students Collect Hurricane Disaster Relief Items

Grace in conjunction with Springfield High School students and area North American Lutheran Church congregations donate generously to Puerto Ricans impacted by Hurricane Maria

Springfield, Ohio, 45504–  Austin Tyree, a Springfield High School student, began a hurricane relief effort campaign in September to collect canned goods and bottled water for hurricane victims. In only four weeks Springfield High School students and staff donated cases of non-perishable food and bottled water. However, as Austin discovered collecting relief items was easy, he discovered that finding an organization to deliver the donated items challenging. After numerous calls to local agencies Austin contacted Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, member of the North American Lutheran Church (NALC). Grace was thrilled to partner with Austin Tyree and Springfield High School students and staff to deliver the items to help residents in need of aid.

For months Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church and area North American Lutheran Church congregations have been collecting buckets, cleaning supplies, bottled water, other emergency supplies for victims of Hurricane Harvey, Irma, and now Maria. Donated disaster relief items are delivered to the national NALC Disaster Warehouse in Caldwell, Ohio. These items are shipped to NALC congregations impacted by these hurricanes. In turn, these NALC congregations address the needs of their congregational members and to the larger community. Recovery will take years. If you would like to help with relief efforts contact Mary Bates, NALC Disaster Coordinator, at disasterresponse@thenalc.org.
